Newcomers to the Puzzle Hall Inn may well be surprised to discover a pub just there, half way down a road that goes nowhere in particular and surrounded by not much at all.

Well it wasn’t always like that! Take a look at the maps below and you’ll see that the pub used be in an area packed with industrial activity. The maps from 1894 and 1933 actually show very little development over the period, but that changed in the 1960s and 70s. Like many towns in West Yorkshire, Sowerby Bridge lost much of it’s manufacturing industry, the mills were demolished, people no longer walked to work but drove to jobs elsewhere.
