SUMMARY:West Echo Three + We Have Ghosts + Rock Paper Sister
DESCRIPTION:In honour of Sowerby Bridge festival we’ve got three very different rock bands :\nFirst up is Huddersfield’s Rock Paper Sister. Influenced by Guano Apes\, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Skunk Anansie they combine a classic rock sheen with a side order of funkiness and dramatic vocals. Expect huge riffs\, creative bass lines\, flamboyant drums and melodic vocals. With their energetic live performances and strong songwriting\, Rock Paper Sister are quickly making a name for themselves in the local music scene and their recent appearances at Bands on the Square and the Longest Day Festival have garnered strong feedback.\n“A dynamic female-fronted 4 piece delivering high-voltage rock.” – Kirklees Most Wanted\nhttps://www.facebook.com/Rrock.Paper.Sister/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx4VUu8gW44\nNext up we have Chester’s We Have Ghosts\, a visceral punk rock trio known for delivering raw\, riff-heavy anthems laced with lyrical intensity. Conjuring a storm of alt-rock\, grunge\, punk\, and post-whatever chaos. With lyrics that cut deep and a sound that swings between hypnotic tension and raw catharsis\, they blur the lines between vulnerability and venom. Think serrated riffs\, explosive shifts\, and raw emotion soaked in distortion.\n“This is raw and visceral rock. A refreshing reminder of what guitar-driven music can still do” – Havoc Underground\nhttps://wehaveghosts.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/wehaveghostsband/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@wehaveghosts/videos\n\nAnd finally hailing from Oldham metallic digital rock duo\, West Echo Three deliver some balls to the wall rock excitement for the modern age. With their winning mix of lo-fi beats\, top drawer guitar shredding and snarled vocals have gained a reputation as a formidable live act\, comfortable on any stage.\nThe band’s passion for live excellence translates to their studio output\, too\, with their one EP and three singles (so far) receiving praise for their signature approach to songcraft .If you like your rock bang up to date with the kind of innovative mix of punk\, metal and electronica that make NIN seem like sedate old Grandpas ready for the retirement home then you’re in for a treat.\n“West Echo Three are cut from a different cloth when compared to most indie-rock music.” – Analogue Trash\nhttps://westechothree.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@westechothree\nhttps://www.facebook.com/WestEchoThree/mentions/

SUMMARY:The Frank Burkitt Band
DESCRIPTION:First Thursday of the month – LORE is our Folk and Roots music night hosted by Gareth Scott with special guests each month.\n‘Frank Burkitt has been performing for 15 years with partner and vocalist/flautist Kara Filbey. They met in Edinburgh in 2004 and have since lived and toured extensively throughout the UK\, New Zealand and Australia.\nPlaying a broad mix of original and traditional Scottish folk songs\, Americana and country ballads\, Burkitt’s highly intelligent songwriting is what sets him apart\, as well as his relaxed stage presence and ability to tell great stories.\nOn moving to New Zealand in 2014\, they formed The Frank Burkitt Band with whom they were awarded the Vodafone New Zealand Music Award (Tui award) for Best Folk Artist 2019. When not touring with the full band\, they relish the chance to perform their intimate duo set. Two voices that have had 15 years to blend and produce the closest\, most stunning harmonies that you’ll hear. Captivating and intimate performers that will entertain and enchant.’\n**** Northern Sky Magazine 8/10 Americana UK 9/10 Liverpool Sound & Vision\nFree entry\, donations toward events and artists always welcome.

SUMMARY:Alpaca Redemption + Groves
DESCRIPTION:Alpaca Redemption are a four-piece Indie/New Wave Pop band from Kiel\, Leipzig and Todmorden. The guitar swings from frantic electric climbs to soft intricate melodies. Vocals are inspired by the raw and mystical ways of Irish folk songs and the lyrics find beauty in the bittersweet of dreams that may never be fulfilled.\n“Shouldered by the greats of new wave\, disco and indie Aplaca Redemption are sometimes ornate\, sometimes straightforward\, but always sweet and hopeful.” – Norden Arts Festival\nhttps://alpacaredemption.bandcamp.com/music\nhttps://www.instagram.com/alpacaredemption/\nGroves are a four-piece band from Leeds who inspired by the catchiness of pop melodies and the scrappiness of rock music create Emo pop for the depressed Zillennial. Their influences range from the dreamy vibes of The Cranberries\, to the emotive guitars of American Football and the synthpop feel of The Midnight.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/grovessongs\nhttps://soundcloud.com/groves-82494346\nhttps://www.tiktok.com/@grovessongs

Compelling acoustic fingerstyle mastery touching on Jansch / Basho / Kottke punctuated by dark storytelling.https://lowpoint.bandcamp.com/album/the-horse-loom\n\nAndrew DR AbbottInstrumental compositions for (baritone) acoustic guitar from Halifaxhttps://andyabbott.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-clover-hill\nat Puzzle Hall Inn\, 21 Hollins Mill Lane\, Sowerby Bridge\, HX6 2RF4pm – 6pmFREE ENTRY with donations for bands gratefully accepted.\n\n—- more info —-\n‘The Horse Loom is the name given to the music made by Northumbrian singer and guitarist Steve Malley\, who you might best know as the driving force of the corruscating power trio The Unit Ama. Malley’s solo work sits adjacent\, but somewhat in opposition\, to his band output – adding his work with intense post-hardcore bands Crane and Four Frame.\nChannelling the same extended\, exploratory\, on-the-edge quality of his guitarwork through an acoustic setting\, he uses this to frame a portfolio of truly extraordinary songs that combine mysticism with a very rooted\, earthy reality. Added to that his rich\, unaffected voice and you have something unique and special\, and which has made The Horse Loom a word-of-mouth phenomenon to compare with fellow Tynesiders Richard Dawson and Nev Clay.’\n“Northumberland’s best kept secret” The Wire.\n“Acoustic songs that interweave his surprisingly tender vocals with his truly incredible guitar style that recalls Davy Graham or Bert Jansch at their finest”\n“Where to start to describe The Horse Loom? The best acoustic guitar player in the country? Maybe. The most unique marriage between British folk music\, avant garde guitar playing and punk rock spirit? Certainly. Wonderful? Definitely. Under-rated? You’ll have to ask him about that.\nNorthumbrian guitarist and singer Steve Malley would doubtless be extremely embarrassed to read any of these things. That says a lot. Steve played guitar in Crane in the early 90s\, whose post-Husker Du take on The Byrds-meets-DC hardcore earned them a deserving reputation as one of the UK’s finest live bands. He would go on to play in Kodiak\, Four Frame and then most notably The Unit Ama. The Unit Ama existed in direct contrast to their (musical) peers from America. Whereas a cold and cool approach was favoured by the bands from across the pond\, The Ama dropped any of this façade and opened themselves and their music to possibilities of accident and misfortune creating a live experience that was truly inspiring. I say with total sincerity that they changed a lot of people’s musical outlook forever.\nThe Horse Loom sees Steve take this approach and apply it to his love of folk music. Combining folk structures and melodies with his incredible guitar playing has made The Horse Loom something truly unique.” – Chris Summerlin

SUMMARY:Poetry And Spoken Word Evening
DESCRIPTION:On the fourth Tuesday of the month the music stops and we pay attention to the spoken word. There has been poetry at the Puzzle Hall since the Nineties\, with breaks when the pub was closed.\n\nSometimes we are a small seminar group bringing work we love\, and want to discuss\, including our own writings. If we get bigger numbers we can get out the microphone and make it an open mic. Everyone is welcome.\n\nThere are many kinds of poetry nights: poetry slams\, formal invited poets with an audience\, open mics\, spoken word events. We are often another kind of gathering: talking about poetry\, why we write\, what we read\, themes and differences.

SUMMARY:Jazz @ The Puzzle with Panjumby
DESCRIPTION:Led by steel-pannist Dudley Nesbitt\, Panjumby are a five-piece band with a repertoire of Modern Jazz\, Contemporary Calypso and classic Latin tunes from Brazil\, Cuba\, Trinidad and Jamaica. A high-energy group of engaging and accessible performers\, \nNesbitt grew up in Trinidad and was a child prodigy on the steel pan\, eventually becoming a regular arranger for the prestigious annual Panorama competition at a very young age. \nHe has an extraordinary musical mind and is fully capable of composing a through-written piece of music for a pan orchestra of over a hundred players in his head\, teaching them all \ntheir parts from memory without recourse to scores or notes\, or of orchestrating pieces from the classical canon for the same size ensemble. \nHe is one of the world’s prime exponents of steel pan; one of the few musicians to truly translate steel pan techniques into a jazz context and to bring a group close to understanding the real \nunderpinnings of Calypso\, Soca & Trinidadian rhythm. \nThe present line-up has been steady for fifteen years\, and the musicians have developed the kind of instinctive rapport that most groups nowadays can only aspire to. \nThe band’s line up is: \nDudley Nesbitt\, steel pan\, cowbell \nRichard Ormrod\, sax\, flute\, percussion \nBarclay McKay\, keyboard\, guitar \nPaul Baxter\, bass \nSam Hobbs\, drums
