SUMMARY:Mums + Callis
DESCRIPTION:Mums (Hex records)Loud melodic hook-laden sludge-rock trio a la Melvins / Karp / Cherubshttps://hexrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mums-legs\nCallis High-energy post-punk trio from Todmorden in a Joy Division / Sonic Youth / The Cure vein https://callisssss.bandcamp.com/track/summer-bones\nplus DJ Clean Shirt (Love Gun / Sex Beat) spinning post punk recs into the night\nat Puzzle Hall Inn\, 21 Hollins Mill Lane\, Sowerby Bridge\, HX6 2RF 8pm – 10pm (live music) with DJs til lateFREE ENTRY with donations for bands gratefully accepted. Live music done in time for trains back to Leeds / Manc.\n— Further Info —\nMums\nThe narrative of Mums began in the crowded hallways of high school\, where Jack and Roanne Evans found mutual resonance in the tumultuous sounds of alternative rock and its heavier\, wilder cousins. This was not just any serendipitous meeting\, for it was the birthplace of an aural venture first christened ‘Aeroplane Flies High‘. However\, like many bands\, identities morphed\, sounds matured\, and from the cocoon emerged Mums—stronger\, sharper\, and infinitely more cacophonous. With their sound pushed its own boundaries\, Mums drive deeper into the realm of identifiable riffs and catchy vocal lines\, while ensuring the feedback always threatened to shatter the speakers.\nTheir 2016 album “Land Of Giants” was nothing short of audacity encapsulated in vinyl. It teetered on the edge of auditory anarchy\, yet never quite lost its balance.Touring the shores of the UK and beyond\, Mums continued their quest for sonic perfection\, establishing an insatiable audience that thrived on decibel-driven debauchery.\nWith their newest offering\, “Legs“\, Mums doesn’t just make a statement of return; they craft a sonic tapestry that spans their entire journey. From songs echoing their nascent days to fresher compositions borne out of Jonny’s inclusion\, the album is a reflection of growth. And to add a touch of the serendipitous\, during its recording\, the Mums family was poised to welcome a new member\, with a baby Mum marking their presence in utero.\nIntending to parallel the fervour of “Land Of Giants“\, yet infuse more refined songwriting and an immersive auditory experience\, Mums ensured every note\, every riff\, every beat resonated just as they envisioned.\nWith an imminent release through Hex Records in the U.S. and Society Of Losers Records across Europe\, “Legs” stands ready to storm the alternative scene. It’s a testament to the indomitable spirit of rock.\nhttps://idioteq.com/thick-riffed-rockers-mums-premiere…/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m93fy_btyo\nCallis\n‘Alternative\, heavy-hitters and DIY to the core\, Callis’ true northern work ethic\, filled with grit and fueled with a passion for independent art has seen them self-organise shows in the capital\, curate their own artwork\, handmake merchandise and even catch the attention of Strokes producer\, Gordon Raphael. Attending a Callis live performance is similar to accidentally joining a cult. After the first couple of songs\, the audience will find themselves in the middle of something\, wondering how they got there.’\nhttps://dirtysunbeams.com/…/loud-fast-and-spacey-meet…/

SUMMARY:Bradshaw Mummers & Walkabout
DESCRIPTION:The origins of Mumming have already been written about by those with too much time and a rather strange inclination. Yet people will believe what suits them\, whether this be that the origins are in the 19th century\, medieval times or before the dawn of history. \nWhat seems pretty clear is that the plays always were and still are performed at festive times such as Christmas and Easter. These are of course adaptations of existing pagan festivals. The plays act out representations of death and rebirth in the manner of worshipping the land and the seasons; and they are begging plays performed not just for entertainment but reward from the audience. \nWhat is for sure is that Mumming is a worldwide tradition with plays of remarkably similar themes and characters being performed across the continents. \nSo you can make up the history like the play\, to match the susceptibility of the audience\, or you can link to www.mastermummers.org for a learned perspective and miss the point entirely but at the same time discover a whole new world of mumming.. \nMummers in the UK today fall into two camps: those that dance and those that don’t. Bradshaw Mummers don’t dance\, so don’t ask\, we are Mummers\, the clue is in the name. We\, like other mumming sides\, appear across the land performing only mumming plays. \n

SUMMARY:Annalies Monsere + Geraldine Snell
DESCRIPTION:Annelies Monseré (Belgium)Experimental minimalist drone folk on Horn of Plenty records. https://horn-of-plenty.bandcamp.com/album/i-sigh-i-resign\nGeraldine Snell (Hebden Bridge)Hypnotic dream pop conjured from looped vocals and keyboard by Hebden Bridge artist and musician.http://geraldinesnell.com\nat Puzzle Hall Inn\, 21 Hollins Mill Lane\, Sowerby Bridge\, HX6 2RF 8pm – 10pm (live music)\nFREE ENTRY with donations for bands gratefully accepted. Live music done in time for trains back to Leeds / Manc. Supported with funds from Arts Council England.\n— Further Info —\nAs a member of Ghent’s experimental music scene\, over the past two decades Annelies Monseré has slowly refined a singular approach to musicality\, moving from the sparse\, instrumental piano works that defined her early career\, toward increasingly complex arrangements of instrumentation that offer a central place to her own voice\, issued by noteworthy imprints such as BlueSanct\, Morc Tapes\, Stroom\, three:four\, and Horn of Plenty. Like her work within the widely celebrated ensemble\, Luster\, as well as Distels (her duo with Steve Marreyt) and Hydromedusae (her duo with Jessica Bailiff)\, Monseré’s solo efforts establish a strikingly beautiful and remarkably unique territory that elegantly balances between rigorous experimentalism\, minimalism\, drone\, and folk.\nHer new album\, ‘I Sigh\, I resign’\, retains the intimacy of earlier work with its close-mic’d keyboards and vocals that capture every breath. Folk and early music are at the core of her sound but the palette of piano\, organ\, bass guitar\, cello\, synth and drum machine make it very much a document of the here and now.\nThe cover features Annelies’s sketches referencing female artists from the Dutch Golden Age who\, highly revered at the time\, now serve as mere footnotes to Rembrandt\, Vermeer et al. The cover sets the tone for the music within which deals with power structures\, toxic environments\, and questioning (his)tories.\nStandout tracks include the pounding rhythm and choir-like voices on ‘Salt’ as well as the tense folk/post-rock of ‘Simple Fractures’ (co-written with her Luster bandmates). The album’s most tender moment is a cover of Jean Ritchie’s Appalachian ballad ‘One I Love’ played and sung by Annelies and her ten year old son.\n‘I Sigh\, I Resign’ is an intimate piece of work that explores personal and general themes which\, having played-out for centuries\, are still depressingly relevant. Despite the suggestion of defeat in the title\, ‘I Sigh\, I Resign’ is an affirming and defiant manifesto for growth and liberation.\nLive\, she will be joined on stage by Tim Depraetere\, who also performs solo as Goldscammer\, on vocals\, bass and guitar.\nDaryl Worthington wrote about ‘I Sigh\, I Resign’ (2024) in The Wire ‘Past and present\, personal and historic\, dreamlike and mundane merge into flickering yet coherent constellations. Monseré’s music creates spaces where everything haunts everything else. A place where the past doesn’t disappear but leaks into the present. That might sound disorientating\, but her songs render it eerily gorgeous.’ And Boomkat wrote ‘Monseré has always made her own distinctive kind of folk music; as entwined with Codeine’s hushed slowcore as Nico’s icy expression. Here\, she sounds completely unlocked – after two decades of cautious experimentation\, she finally draws with more deliberate strokes – and the effect is mesmerising.’\nhttps://www.annelies-monsere.net/\n—-\nGeraldine Snell\nA multifaceted artist\, musician\, author\, filmmaker and facilitator hailing from the Wild West Yorkshire\, Geraldine’s melodic\, meditative\, mellifluous music makes mesmerized audiences slow down and soften to the precious vulnerability and medicinal potential of creative expression.\nHer sound is tender\, ethereal\, and hypnotic\, channeling similar vibes to Grouper\, Julee Cruise\, Laurie Anderson\, Portishead\, Tirzah\, Cocteau Twins\, James Blake\, Bat for Lashes\, fka Twigs\, Bjork\, Lael Neale\, Angel Olsen\, You’ll Never Get To Heaven\, & Beach House.\nWith recent highlights ranging from the release of second album Light & Love LIVE (produced on a creative retreat awarded by Britten Pears Arts Trust) and Cocoon: Eclosion EP with Debugger to performances at Spice of Life Soho\, Katzpace London\, and festivals across the UK\, watch this space for new releases and shows leading up to her third album overlove\, co-produced with Richard Knight\, across 2024.\nhttp://geraldinesnell.comhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oqZsx3igEUhttp://geraldinesnell.bandcamp.com
